It takes us about an hour to get ready and to pack our stuff into my Jeep. Albany is far enough that weâll need to stay up there for a few days, so I call Dirby to let him know our plans, then inform Ortega of the same. Iâve almost finished my coffee as I climb into the driverâs seat. Lucas climbs in beside me, and I notice heâs got a brown paper bag in his hands.
âWhatâs that?â I ask, as I start the car and pull out of the parking spot. The hotel lot has filled up around us. Itâs the last chance of the season to get out here and enjoy the lake before it starts to get cold, so tourists have flooded into the city. On one hand, itâs allowed us to not stand out so much. But on the other hand, itâs so packed in town that there are lines everywhere and itâs nearly impossible to park.
âI grabbed us a few donuts,â he says as he shakes the bag in front of me.
âWhen did you even have time to do that?â I ask as I turn right out of the parking lot and onto the street.
âYou took forever to pack,â he says.
âI did not take forever. It took me like fifteen minutes,â I say, a bit more defensive than I should be. Maybe Iâm still annoyed by the interaction with Neal and thatâs weighing on my words.
âFor someone whoâs moved four hundred times, Iâd think that you could pick up the pace a little. I was ready in five minutes, so I took the liberty of getting us some breakfast,â he says with a smug smile.
âWell, good for you.â I roll my eyes at him then turn my attention back to the road. Lucas eats his glazed donut and I munch on a coffee roll. As we carve our way through a forest of pine trees northward, the sugar hits my bloodstream and I wish I had more to do than just drive.
The trees crowd around the road, and as we climb upward the hills grow into mountains, then finally give way. Above us, the blue sky is dotted with white clouds, and Iâm glad that for now itâs not raining. Thereâs nothing I hate more than driving in the rain. It takes us a little over an hour to make it to Albany. Since Albany is a larger city than we usually stay in, we were able to get something a little nicer. And Iâll relish it.
It takes us about ten minutes to find our hotel, check in, and settle into our rooms. I pull up Keelyâs file on my phone and look over it again. While weâre here, I really want to talk to her sister again, see if sheâs come up with anything else. But Iâm going to give her some breathing room first, since we didnât end our last call on the best terms. When Lucas finally knocks on my door, I know Iâm done game-planning.
